Anatomy, Study of the Wall
Over three weeks, a stud-finder was used to hear where possible wall studs may be located behind a museum wall in the NSU Art Museum of Fort Lauderdale. Alfonso began to chart her assumptions of the wall behind by calculating the stud's position, height, and width. Using charcoal and graphite, utilitarian materials, direct contact with the wall's surface attempted to reveal its interior structure. The constructed image drawn on the surface suggested and imposed an imagined perspective onto the framework on a one-to-one scale. While it is impossible to understand precisely how these walls, foundations, buildings, and/or structures are set up or by whom, Alfonso recreated “the truth” beyond the sheetrock. The drawing that remained on the surface became a hologram of reality, a glitchy echo of its inner construction.
